My mother who wasn't particularly superstitious would never allow us to open an umbrella in the house.

Apparently this might come from the Victorian period when umbrellas were wooden and very big, and if you opened them in the house you risked to break stuff.

That sounds like a rationalisation to me (although I believe it about the size and weight.) I think my Ma said something similar, but I don't think that's the whole story. Anyway I would never open out my little tiddly one, to this day, indoors, albeit it makes it harder to dry it out.
